Sports Travel: On horseback in Hyde Park

Theme: Horesriding
Hyde Park is a place known for its Rotten Row where people ride, including royal guards since 300 years back. Therefore it is particularly special to be able to join them. Richard Briggs has the stables just north of the park in what first just looks to be a residential area full of hotels (but then again, loads of expensive studios in central London are converted old mews). You can come as a group or on your own and it is approved by the British Horse Society.
Equipment: Hats and boots can be rented.

Sports Travel: Oxford v. Cambridge boat race

Theme: Sports Watching
This boat race is such a classic that it is now broadcasted all over the World. I wonder if poet Wordsworth's nephew and his friend at the two different universities could imagine this when they first got the idea and Cambridge sent the first challenge to Oxford in 1829. The race starts at Putney and continues to the goal at Mortlake, both nice areas of the Thames so be there early if you want a good spectator spot, or try somewhere in the middle.

Directions: Putney is on the tube and Mortlake can be reached by train.

Yes, I mean birds as in those winged creatures people watch with binoculars. There is just nowhere else to put it here on VT. One of the best places for birdwatching in London is along the Thames, upstream between Mortlake and Hampton Court where the river is full of little leafy islands sheltering loads of herons and other birds. At Mortlake there is also a wetlands area full of other species. To be ctd.

Note teh smoke in the Royal Adelphi will be no more from 1st July 07 when the smoking ban in public places in introduced - cleaner air for us, less income for the business perhaps. | sourbugger Tue Apr 25, 2006 19:50 UTC nice comments - could not agree more | scottishvisitor Wed May 18, 2005 21:21 UTC Harrods - yes - a must see!!
