For its size, London is very peaceful and I would just start with the usual safety precautions like watch your handbag, don't walk alone in parks after dark etc. Pickpocketing exists in typical tourist places like Covent Garden and Leicester Square. Your worst danger might be the left hand traffic if you come from continental Europe :-)
There are no really bad areas in the city centre. Parts of London I would avoid after dark are around Hackney, Kilburn, Walthamstow and the area along Seven Sisters Road in the north, and Peckham south of the river. As for seedy stations, Kings Cross is the worst with drugs and prostitution in the area around it while others stations are OK.
