Salisbury was chosen as a base for us when we wanted to see Stonehenge and Avebury. We knew the city itself would have sights too as it is famous for its cathedral and we were not disappointed as it was an excellent base full of friendly people. Salisbury with around 115 000 inhabitants is only a small city (and the only one in Wiltshire) but this size together with its medieval history and architecture reminded us of kitan's native York - just without the viking touch and the city walls. The city itself has enough to keep you busy for a couple of days without even visiting the surrounding UNESCO World Heritages at all but of course you should do so too, and they are a major reason tourists come here. It annoyed me to think of all the tourists whizzing straight to Stonehenge on a daytrip from London though, as they miss out on getting a feel for the entire area and its historic links, and the many more mysterious places on the great Salisbury Plain. |
