Captain Cook and fish and chips

by Sjalen - last update: Aug 21, 2006

I might not have travelled all over the world yet but little Whitby actually is on the top list of destinations for me so far! Firstly, I love the sea, secondly, I love Yorkshire and Whitby being a seaside town in Yorkshire is unbeatable.

People travelling to Yorkshire often overlook it (and indeed my VT Scarborough page is twice as visited...) which is probably due to the fact that the coast sticks out from the main part of the county and tourists mostly go to York itself. Those who do go to the North York Moors national park at the edge of Whitby often end up here though, and even more so after the TV series on Captain Cook and the Endeavour replica that sailed from here. Sometimes hoards of young people from Middlesborough and Teesside in search of stag night fun and such also come here, but you will always find that they stop by the amusements and pubs, leaving the great bits of Whitby to you.
Whitby is divided in two by the little river Esk and has a couple of bridges uniting the two halves. One is a small bridge in the centre which takes one lane at a time and often opens to ships bound for the inner harbour. You can see it in the travelogue below. The other is the main car bridge right across the Esk gorge outside the centre.

This is a view of the West Cliff and beyond, taken from the abbey steps so you also see Dracula's landing beach on this side of the river Esk. On West Cliff you find many of the more upmarket terrace hotels built when Whitby was a popular spa town and Stoker, Gaskell and other authors stayed in town. Below the cliff in Whitby's amusement arcades and fish market.
The southern cliff is where the Abbey stands, overlooking town. This is where you find a lot of the romantic little alleys Whitby is famous for as well as Captain Cook's old home.
