Trondheim had never been on my top destination list, but when we went to nearby Jämtland province in Sweden, we thought it was a good opportunity for my Yorkshire husband to finally set foot in viking Norway! Especially since his old viking hometown of York worships St Olav and his sister lives in Lincoln where the craftsmen who built Trondheim Cathedral came from. In the end, my husband himself became Trondheim Tourist of the Day in the local Adresseavisen paper!
I had only been to bustling Oslo before and didn't know what to expect of much smaller Trondheim. I had of course read of the pilgrim stories and Trondheim's importance for vikings and medieval worshippers but didn't really have an image of the place. What I found was a pleasant and friendly city with some magnificent buildings and a cosy riverside area, but also a place where restaurants could be more interesting, bearing in mind all the good seafood. Maybe I looked in the wrong places but all I seemed to find was "international food" of average quality unless I was willing to spend a fortune in an already expensive country. |

| Pros: | "friendly, historical" | | Cons: | "not as dramatic fjords as to north and south, expensive as the rest of Norway" | | In A Nutshell: | "Go to see the history of Norway!" |
