"Scanian countryside" Sjöbo by Sjalen

Sjöbo Travel Guide: 8 reviews and 33 photos

This page will be both about the small town of Sjöbo itself and the countryside around it. Sjöbo is the hub for services in the area, but there are many more villages around it which are as famous in their own right such as Blentarp and Vollsjö, as well as several famous castles. So far I have not seen much of the northern parts of the area but I hope I will get to explore it later on and add to this page. Meanwhile, my pictures of Östarp will show you some countryside.

Walking the streets of Sjöbo is a bit like stepping back in time to the 1950s compared to other Scanian small-towns. Sure, there are modern cars in the streets, but the village-like centre of it still feels incredibly old world in a sleepy kind of way. I can only begin to imagine how boring it must be to be a teenager here, but to those of us stressed out by the modern world it is quite a nice change for a day. In the late 1980s, Sjöbo hit national media when it refused to accept newly arrived immigrants and the local Sjöbo Party was founded by some narrow-minded people but this never lasted long and Sjöbo has since worked hard to get rid of this reputation.
