"Tofta area" Gnisvärd by Sjalen

Gnisvärd Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 7 photos

Tofta is a famous beach and holiday area some 20 kilometres south of Visby on the toad to Klintehamn. Just north of Tofta itself you will find the little fishing village of Gnisvärd. At first I planned to make a couple of Gnisvärd tips under a Tofta page, but VT turned out to lack Tofta in its database despite this being the more famous place and indeed the local parish name so now this is a page with a bit of both.

Gnisvärd gets its peculiar name from "gnida svärd" meaning rubbing swords, since this was were warriors came to do just that in the sand to clean their swords of blood after a battle. Today, there is nothing that dramatic going on here, but just south of the village you still have Tofta with its sandy beach where I guess it all happened. Gnisvärd itself is now a sleepy fishing village where not even fishing is big business anymore but where you can enjoy looking at the lovely fishermen's cottages in the main street, most of them summer houses today. There is also a relaxed restaurant where you can stop to enjoy the sunset on a good day.

This is not my favourite part of Gotland as I find it a bit lacking in sights, but if you drive or bike between Visby and the south and follow the coast, then do stop here to take in Gnisvärd itself with its history.
