"Sweden's apple orchard" a Kivik Travel Page by Sjalen

Kivik - "cheeveek" - is a large village by the sea in the picturesque Österlen area (see my Simrishamn page as that is the local town). Although apples are grown here and there in the region, Kivik is the centre and completely surrounded by orchards which makes it gorgeous in May when they are all in blooom up on the hills, with the sea below. Come July, people instead come here for the crazy annual event that is Kivik Market - famous all over Sweden. Then it is time to pounce on the village again in September for the Apple Market, a great event. Whilst certainly not as picturesque as many of the smaller Österlen fishing villages, and with fewer things to do than in Åhus to the north, Kivik is still a good place to base yourself and the apple exhibitions has to be seen and the local cider enjoyed if you are in the area :-)

Just south of Kivik is one of Sweden's southernmost national parks, Stenshuvud, with its characteristic hill which can even be seen from the Danish island of Bornholm on a clear day, and along the coast here there are some gorgeous beaches where you would be forgiven for thinking you're in Thailand, were it not for the water temperature.
