"Monastery and mansion" Romakloster by Sjalen

Romakloster Travel Guide: 4 reviews and 5 photos

Romakloster sounds very nice but do not expect too much. We went here on a rainy day, thinking it was mostly indoor activities. Unfortunately, the rest of Gotland's tourists had the same idea and they just could not cope with it here. Let us hope it changes, as this place has potential and would be a great destination if done properly. As it is now, visitors getting most out of this place are those coming for the annual theatre play put on in the old monastery ruins - usually something by a very famous director. I kept thinking how I wished this place would be in England as then it would be geared up for all the visitors coming due to its massive advertising in local tourist brochures, making people think it has a lot more to offer. Having said all this, I'd still say visit it if you are passing by - there are things to occupy you for a while and the old monastery was one of the wealthiest in Scandinavia in its heydays.

In this picture is Roma Kungsgård, a title for a royal mansion used for court farming or animal breeding, which is found in other Scandinavian places too. The mansion seen today is built by an 18th century County Gotland Chief who wanted something impressive so the not so clever man told local workers to use stone from the old monastery. It is said that the locals were so upset by it all that they are responsible for the fact that the windows are all out of line which you see when you study it properly.
