"Northern tip of Sealand" Gilleleje by Sjalen

Gilleleje Travel Guide: 16 reviews and 38 photos

Gilleleje is one of northern Sealand's most famous seaside resorts, and rightly so. The suffix "leje" means "setting" and is a common Scandinavian suffix (-läge in Swedish) for old fishing harbours which is just what Gilleleje is. Throughout history it has grown and is today the biggest fishing harbour on Sealand which is quite impressive for a small town in an island nation. Because of all the fishermans crofts and cottages, the town has also developed into a major tourist resort, helped by the fact that it is within the Greater Copenhagen transport system and close to this big city and all its holiday makers. But don't let that scare you off. The coast here is a band of little towns and villages and long sandy beaches and you will find your spot. The only time it gets really packed is during the annual harbour festival but even then it is prefectly bearable if you stay away from the festival area itself.

Walking around taking photos here is a joy with all the tones of sea and sky and the colours of flags and gardens. As I first stepped off the train I though "is this what people rave about" as I made my way to the modern centre, but further on to the harbour, a whole new world opened up. The old part of town with house after house you want to buy, and the big harbour packed with all sorts of boats. You won't regret coming here if you have a day to spare in Copenhagen, and if you have a week in Denmark with a car, why not base yourself here. It will probably cost you a bit more than the more rural parts of Denmark, but that has to be calculated against the fact that you are near the capital with all its sights, yet you can go for a swim in the evening if you've gone around in a hot car all day. There is also a great cycle track between Gilleleje and Helsingoer with great seaside views and beach camp sites.

LOL! Ok, I'll wait - but I just thought that intro pic looks a bit like it was taken somewhere in Sussex! Let me know when this page is finished and I'll be back! :))
