We stayed here after a VT meeting when we were off to England the next morning and therefore didn't want to return to Malmö in the evening. As I had been curious about this top hotel for a while, having stayed in two others by the same management, we decided to splash out since we got a good deal. It turned out to be a great experience - the hotel feels stylish, even if I would have wanted a less smoky lobby but hey, it's Denmark. On the entrance floor is not only the reception but also the breakfast restaurant which doubles as a little restaurant at times and where breakfast was yummy, even though juice glasses were extremely tiny :))) There is also their other, quite well known Copenhagen restaurant as well as the hotel bar down here.
Our room was in quite a stuffy corridor as it was the first hot spring weekend, but the room was pleasantly cool and had excellent bedding and comfy beds. The bathroom was quite small but everything was spotless. The room was quiet despite the hotel being quite close to the Vesterport commuter station and only five minutes' walk from the Central station but we were briefly woken up by a delivery van early morning. The TV had most Danish and Swedish channels as well as BBC Wold and a couple of American ones.
Unique Qualities: Its bar and restaurant area is quite nice and it is very close to the Central station, yet away from the seedy area.
Address: Vester Farimagsgade 9, Copenhagen 1606
Comparison: more expensive than average
Directions: Next to Vesterport station.
Price: US$40-80

I have to admit I haven't stayed here but I would love to! It has a great reputation and is in one of my favourite areas often overlooked by tourists but still close enough to the city centre (2 kms). A wonderful yellow villa, popular with newlyweds.
Unique Qualities: The romantic feeling. It is also from around DKK 800 for a double room which has to be considered a good rate for Copenhagen hotels.
Address: Sondre Fasanvej 4, Frederiksberg
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: In the area north west of the central station. Follow Gammel Kongevej to its far end.

The "seamens home" is today a popular place so book early. I haven't stayed here myself but the location is great. Smack bang in the middle of Copenhagen and next to the canal and bars at Nyhavn. Step outside for bobbing boats all year round and beer gardens in summer. Even if you speak Danish you might wonder about the staff accents - it's Faroese as many come from the islands due to Faroese management. Just around DKK 800 for a double room.
Unique Qualities: Ask for rooms 222 or 322 (slightly more expensive) for harbour views of Nyhavn and the inlet to Copenhagen.
Address: Nyhavn 22
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Nyhavn - the famous canal area at the far end of Ströget. You see it when you reach Kongens Nytorv.

Price: US$80-120

Let's face it, this is easily the most surreal and bizarre hotel I have ever stayed in. By far. My best friends booked us all in here for a girls weekend when they came to surprise me and if the cocktails didn't get us giggling (see nightlife tip), the rooms certainly did. One of the friends ended up with the "Anti Gravity Room" and had a chained up inflatable dinosaur in her room :))) Try that one after a couple of cocktails with the girls!!! It also included a picture of Alaska on the wall and the most spooky drawings and paintings I have seen in a room. Do ask before you book so you know you'll get a room you can actually SLEEP in without nightmares. You can see pictures of it if you look at all of them (and more on their website below). Our room on the other hand, was very clean cut and designed by the head designer of Volkswagen since the hotel cooperates with it for some reason we never figured out. We also managed to get a peak at the "Fertility Room" which is what I would chose if I stayed here with my daughter as she would love the deep forest wallpaper and the porcellain animals on the shelves :))) Apart from the bar, the hotel also has an excellent restaurant (see restaurant tip). The only thing I never liked was the breakfast which was as odd as the rest of it - i.e. surprising. But yes, it was certainly healthier than most hotel breakfasts and it does fill you up. It is also offered until 11.00 which is very generous to clubbers. Oh, the room outfit? They are all clean and with WC/bath as well as TV and a comfy bed. Some can be a bit noisy when clubbers return to Norreport station. The picture here is from the interior of the lift where this Boba Fet dog had its own food bowl...
Unique Qualities: Everything!

This hotel used to be the Le Meridien Mermaid hotel but since autumn 2005 it has become Hotel 27, named after the street number. We booked it as a last minute deal when we realised we wouldn't be bothered crossing the bridge after a late night VT meeting and I knew nothing about this brand new place then. It turned out to be a mixed experience. To its defense, it had only just opened, so I can only assume that they will work on some of the paintwork and old furnishings in the (small-ish) rooms as they are quite worn. Preferrably, they also add better glazing to their windows. We stayed on the first floor and were woken up by loud merrymakers on their way home from nightclubs throughout the night, and traffic was also quite noisy at times. Having said that, they have made their reception according to a sleek Scandinavian design with white walls intercepted by cheerfully coloured Danish chairs. Maybe this is something they will pick up on as a running theme. The adjacent John Bull pub which was a favourite amongst expats has closed and something else might come in its stead. Meanwhile, the hotel only has its breakfast restaurant but that was cosy enough and left nothing to complain about. Finally, the service comes with a smile here and the location is great, only a block away from the City Hall and with walking distance to the Central station, parliament and Latin Quarters.

As we had a child free week, we took them up on their summer deals - the things you do for VT ;-) As they knew why we booked, we were upgraded to a sea view room. There were of course other children in the breakfast buffet the next morning as we weren't the only ones to suddenly afford this stylish accommodation :-)
I can recommend anyone to stay here as the beds are comfy, staff friendly and the whole hotel is housed in a former storage building in the harbour, complete with romantic wooden beams, yet very modern once you are in the corridors with their ice machines etc. Great combination of old and new and a good location.
Address: Toldboldsgade, Copenhagen 2300
Comparison: more expensive than average
Directions: Just around the corner from Nyhavn, along the seaside walk to Amalienborg Castle.
Price: US$80-120
