Svaneke is Denmark's smallest and easternmost town with some 1800 inhabitants. It is a delightful little place which has won prizes for its pretty houses. Set by a rocky harbour, it was once a fishing village until it got town rights in 1410, and you have to know exactly how to navigate your boat to get here by sea. It is one of Bornholm's cosiest towns, smaller than the biggest two, but with all amenities you could wish for and easy to reach both by bike and bus. Once here, you carefully walk along its narrow pavements, peeking into cheerful yellow cottages.

The only negative things I can say about Svaneke is that in the planning, they should maybe have done more with the harbour area as regards pedestrian life - it is heavily trafficked. For being a popular Bornholm destination, there is also a lack of accommodation in high season compared to other island favourites, so book well in advance both for the hostel and the most expensive harbour hotel if you want to make it your Bornholm base. Something you won't regret doing. This is a place where food is taken seriously with a famous fish smokery and a fantastic brewery with food to match its beer. Next to the brewery is a candy workshop popular with the children. That is if they haven't already fallen asleep after a day at Joboland's unique little amusement park.
