Who'd have thought a hospital interesting! I cut my finger badly in Verona and had to have it dressed once in Venice. I could probably have gone to a pharmacy near the hotel since they are well staffed in Italy, but decided on the Ospitale Civile since we would take a boat ride to Burano from a quay nearby afterwards. I am so glad I did, as this turned out to be one of the most fascinating experiences in Venice! For a start, we saw this great 15th century facade and only realised that THAT was the hospital as we saw "Farmacia" on a door next to it. Then there was a big fat cat sat on the stairs by the entrance. We went into a great hall full of doctors on a smoking break and through the ancient corridors all the way to the more modern casualty area which included a garden with even more cats. At the back of the hospital is the casualty entrance with a quay for ambulance boats - where else can you see that? A fascinating morning was had by all and this was even without seeing the hospital chapel with its Tintoretto...
