WHAT IS YOUR AFRICAN NAME?

by DAO - last update: Dec 11, 2005

To truly see South Africa, you must be adopted and receive your African name.

Many people have little in terms of possessions. What they have is heart and friendship in abundance. To share experiences and meals is to become like family. I was fortunate to have been adopted by 3 families and given my African Name.

My name is Jabulani. Please call me Jabu. It means Happiness.

There are 11 official languages in RSA. Many people speak several languages, and everyone (thankfully for me) speaks English. What you must do and understand that it is not the language you use, but the greeting.

Wherever you travel, you must greet people! You cannot just walk in somewhere and start asking for things! Stop. Take a deep breath and shake hands and greet everyone. You will feel better and so will the people you are meeting. It is the African way and the sort of good manners we miss too often in the ‘Western’ world.

Hello. How are you today? My name is… what is yours?

Welcome to south AFRICA!

The Neighbors

Visitors are an endless source of entertainment. Local kids seem to appear from nowhere just to watch new arrivals.

Washing

Many homes do not have indoor plumbing. Washing clothes is done by hand. See the largest tub? That also doubles as a bath when you are ready for a wash.

Pros:"Incredible natural beauty and friendly people"
Cons:"Dangerous driving (other cars and animals)"
In A Nutshell:"So much more than just the coast."

As an SA ex-pat I truly believe that you really discovered the TRUE RSA. The driving tips are excellent- as are the STD tips (even more so by todays standards). This is an excellent page for any visitor to SA. Nkosi Jabu
