Things To Do: BUY SOME EGGS

OK. I did not. And I still feel bad about it every time I look at these pictures. Some 'Highways' can suddenly become non-existent in ‘Moz’. This poor kid was trying to sell some eggs to feed his family. And I did not stop. I am not a bad person, I just did not need the eggs. On the bright side there was (surprisingly!) a lot of traffic and he was the only roadside seller of any goods for miles. He also looked fairly healthy. I feel better now.
So, if you do find yourself approaching a child on the side of the ‘road’; stop if you want some eggs.

Things To Do: EARLY MORING FISH WITH THE LOCALS
Tip Rating: |

Fancy an early morning fish breakfast? Have a fish along costal areas with some of the local men. They get up early and will probably let you join them for a small gift. The guys are out early to provide a good daily meal for their families and socialise at the same time. They are happy to have company, as this is a fun morning out as well.
There are many hotels that will let you grill your fish later in the day, or breakfast if you really want. This is a lot cheaper than the charter boats that will charge you a fortune because you are a tourist. You can learn more about the local families routine and the challenges they face day to day.

Things To Do: SCALA - CULTURE IN MAPUTO
Tip Rating: |
Scala is an art house cinema/arts centre that is named after the Teatro alla Scala (Scala Theatre) built in Milan under the auspices of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria in 1776. The actuality does not live up to the grandeur of its namesake, but it is an art cinema in the true sense of the name. The day I visited my guide told me it was closed because it ran out of money (again), but I can find film times there for tomorrow on the internet, so it is open again! The building houses a cafe, restaurant, snack bar, a bakery and take-away service.
There is also a Production Company housed here called PROMARTE (Tel: +258 1 425365, Fax: +258 1 422434, M?vil: + 258 82 30 22 350, promarte@tropical.co.za). They recently produced a movie called ?O Jardim do Outro Homem? which tells the all too real tale of a woman contracting AIDS from a man who refuses to wear a condom.
So, if it is open, stop by and find out what movie is playing and what other activities are available.

Things To Do: MAPUTO - MERCADO MUNICIPAL
Tip Rating: |

This massive market has it all. Outside the entrance you can find men selling watches and sunglasses. Unfortunately you can also find your pocket picked by the many thieves that stare at you as you walk by. Inside is an explosion of colourful fruits and vegetables (mostly from South Africa). As you walk towards the interior you find the fish and meat stalls. Be careful, many of the workers do not like to have their picture taken. Go just a bit farther and you come upon the nut stand full of fresh roasted cashews and other tropical nuts. After that you will find the necessities of life like pots, soap and beauty products. Tucked just at the rear are the souvenir stands. Everything is available and every price is negotiable. Walking around is an experience itself even if you are not there to buy anything.

Things To Do: THE GRAND TRAIN STATION - MAPUTO
Tip Rating: |

The Grand Train Station is dominated by a large dome designed by Gustave Eiffel (Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty). Eiffel lived in Portugal in the 1870’s and designed several buildings for the Portuguese Colony of Mozambique. Just to add to the sense of history and grandeur, several old steam trains still sit on the tracks. There are daily trains between Johannesburg and Maputo, taking about 15 hours. There is a nicely appointed bar inside if you are waiting for the train or just want to enjoy the railway experience.
You may hear about the missing ‘Kruger Millions’ supposedly gold brought into this train station when Paul Kruger fled the British army during the Boer War. Sounds great and Paul Kruger did come here before leaving for Europe. Unfortunately it was 5 years before the station was built.

Things To Do: THE PORTUGUESE FORT – MAPUTO
Tip Rating: |
Maputo's most evocative landmark is the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceiao (Our Lady of Conception). This Portuguese fort (or Fortaleza) was built in the mid-18th century on top of earlier fortifications. Its striking architecture, battlements and cannons have a dominant position over the main harbour area.
Inside are several striking reliefs commemorating the defeat of Gungunhana (1850-1906), the king of Gaza (an area to the South of Maputo). He was aligned with the Portuguese King, but then rebelled against the colonial authorities. Loyal forces lead by Joaquim Mouzinho de Albuquerque put down the uprising and captured Gungunhana at Chaimite . The former King of Gaza later coverted to Catholicism and lived in exile in the Azores until his death.
A commanding equestrian statue of Joaquim Mouzinho de Albuquerque lies in the small well kept gardens. The question is who is buried inside the gardens? I have read that it is Gungunhana, but he died in the Azores. Joaquim Mouzinho de Albuquerque failed as an Administrator and committed suicide in Lisbon. So who is buried with a Royal looking crest on their tombstone?

Things To Do: A BIT OF BRITISH HISTORY - MAPUTO

Standing in absolute contrast to the Communist Themed avenues and statues to great Mozambique leaders is the Louis Tregardt Trek memorial garden. A commemorative plaque in memory of the Voortrekker leader Louis Tregardt was unveiled on 12 October 1968 when South African Navy ships SAS Simon van der Stel, Kimberley and Mosselbaai visited Lourenço Marques (now Maputo).
Tregardt was a pioneer in the Boer ‘Great Trek’ movement. The Boers felt that the continued influx of British settlers and the emancipation of slaves in 1833 they need to leave for greener pastures. He formed a group of 9 families who set out for the Portuguese Colony of Delagoa Bay (Maputo) to establish trade links and find new lands. He is the acknowledged leader of the Voorste Mense (The Great Trek's `people in front'). He found Delagoa Bay in 1838, but he and many in his party died from Malaria.

Things To Do: FRENCH/MOZAMBIQUE CULTURE - MAPUTO

The French-Mozambican Cultural Centre is housed in a large, mostly wrought iron, building across from the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao. The large structure was a colonial hotel built in 1896. It was opened at the Cultural Centre on 13 July 1995. You can wonder in for free and see various art works and dsipalys. There is also a large concert area. Check out the website or the Time Out Magazine for up coming shows and exhibits.
Do not worry about the crocodile in the fountain area. He is a work of art as well!
