  • You don’t have to pay to take their picture. You do if you want to be in the picture. 20 years ago they were not even there. 6 years ago there was 2 of them with plastic outfits. Now there are about a dozen and they look like extras in a Ben Hur movie. Business must be good! In fact there is another one of these guys at the Spanish Steps now!

  • This has to be the most unappreciated and overlooked monument in (Ancient) Rome. Just to the East of the Plazza Venezia, it lies in the shadow of the impossibly large Victor Emmanuel Monument (1911) and is near the imposing Coliseum. Unlike so much of Ancient Rome, this column is virtually intact from its creation in 113 AD. It is both Victory Monument and Tomb. The 40 meter monument has 2500 figures in 155 scenes on 18 marble blocks and tells the story of Trajan’s victory over the Dacians in 2 wars fought in what is now Romania. The original statue of Trajan atop the monument was replaced by one of Saint Peter in 1587. It is hollow and has 183 stairs to the top. Because of its advanced age, the stairs are not open to the public.

Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD) expanded the Roman Empire defeating Dacia (Modern Romania), Arabia, Mesopotamia and taking Babylon. He also directed the building the Markets of Trajan on the slopes of the Quirinal Hill. Unfortunately he had no place to be buried as the resting place of Emperors, the Mausoleum of Augustus, was full. So the Column of Trajan was built and Trajan and his wife were buried in the base.

Bocca della Verita: TRUTH AND DARE !

  • Want to try the world’s oldest lie detector? You may not when you find out that it bites. ‘The Mouth of Truth’ is 1.6 meters in diameter and weighs about 1300 kilograms. You place your hand in its mouth and tell the truth. If you lie, it bites your hand off. Ouch! Still feel brave? This fantastic large face is made from solid marble and has been dated back to about the 4th century BC.

This huge Pagan symbol combines several gods and myths and was always intended, despite it great weight, to be displayed vertically (there are holes in the sides for attachments). It seems to be a blend of the gods Faunus and Silvanus. Faunus was a local Italian god similar to Pan (Greek mythology) who was a king who became divine after his death. He was the son of Saturn and the nymph Canens as is the god of fields and herds. His most important tribute the gifts of FERTILITY and PROPHESY. Silvanus was a god of forest and bush.

Because of his ability to Prophesize, the image of Faunus is included in the Baccchanalia and other feasts honouring Bacchus, Janus, Dianna, Saturn and Mars.

Some other characteristics of the face include the round shape which represents the sun – vital for agriculture. Fertility is represented by the scrota and horns (so leaflet tells me that I bought). There is also the heads of 2 wolves in profile on the sides that are a reference to the god Lupercalia. This protector keeps wolves away from the herds, brings good harvests to farmers, game to hunters and fish to fishermen. The Romans probably placed this huge face in the temple of Ceres in the area where Rome was born. Because of its size and strength the face has been passed down the centuries and now finds itself inside a Christian Church.

SO GO ON! Stick your hand and the better arm in. Look at who you came on holiday with. Tell them you love them……

Pantheon: IS THAT A HOLE IN THE ROOF?

  • IT IS! The Pantheon is fantastic building (my favourite in Rome) started out life as a Temple around the year 120. It is a Great domed hall with an ‘Oculus’. Guess that’s a fancy name for a hole in the middle of the roof. Yes, it has a fantastic drain system as rain does come straight in. So does sunshine. Do not leave Rome without visiting!

Piazza Navona: FOUNTAIN OF FOUR RIVERS

  • If you see one thing at night in Rome, make it this fountain in the Piazza Navona. This sculpture and masterpiece was created by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). It was commissioned by Pope Innocent X to add a flourish to his family compound and creating a fountain for Romans by using the recently restored waters of the Acqua Vergine. In the centre is the Egyptian Obelisk taken from the Circus of Massenzio. The four mammoth figures on the sides represent 4 great rivers of the known world and were created by 4 of Bernini’s students. They are:
    • The figure of Nile - sculpted by Jacopo Antonio Fancelli and represents Africa
    • The Ganges by Claude Poussin (Asia)
    • The Danube by Antonio Raggi (Europe)
    • The Plate by Francesco Baratta (Americas)
If you get the chance to see this fabulous fountain on a warm Roman night you will truly understand Rome. The Piazza is alive with cafes, restaurants, scooters and a buzz of people. Its pretty good in the daytime too.

  • The Colosseum is – well – colossal. It dimensions are 188 meters (617 ft) by 156 meters (511 ft) wide and reaching a height of more than 48 meters (159 ft). The Colosseum could accommodate about 55,000 blood thirsty spectators who could enter through 80 separate entrances!

Piazza Navona: The church of Sant'Agnese in Agone

  • The church of Sant'Agnese in Agone was built on the Piazza Navona during the 17th century. It was commissioned by Pope Innocent X who also comissioned the Fountain of the Rivers (by Bernini). He choose Bernini’s rival, Francesco Borromini to create this ornate Baroque Church. Legend has it that the Fountain just outside has a figure raising a hand in the direction of the Church to taunt Borromini by questioning the solidity of the Church – it might fall down. Not true. The fountain was built before the Church. It is also the finall resting place of Pope Innocenzo X Pamphili, its patron. It is built on the site where Saint Agnes was martyred in the Circus of Domitian, now the Piazza Navona.

  • THE COLOSSEUM – A FACT

The word "arena" is the Latin word for sand. Sand was spread across the amphitheater fighting floor to soak up the blood from combatants. They used a lot of sand in here.

    Roman Forum: ARCH OF TITUS
  • Tip Rating:
  • Updated by DAO on Apr 12, 2008
  • Rome Travel Guide

  • The Arch of Titus is an architectural, artistic and historical wonder. It was constructed by the emperor Domitian shortly after the death of his older brother Titus (born AD 41, emperor 79-81). It commemorates Titus’s capture and sacking of Jerusalem in 70 AD, which effectively terminated the Jewish War begun in 66 (complete victory was not achieved until the fall of Masada in 73).The Arch of Titus has provided the general model for triumphal arches erected across the world since the 16th century.

Don’t just walk past this fantastic arch. The amazing thing is that this is built entirely of marble. Inside of the arch there are relief (raised) carvings showing the victory parade when Titus returned to Rome. On the outside are Roman soldiers carrying a huge menorah which they had taken from the Jerusalem. There is also the figure of Emperor Titus (whose head is missing now) rides in a chariot drawn by four horses.
