Things To Do: DAO's SECRET SINGAPORE !!!!
  • Tip Rating:

  • HELLO! Let me let you in on a secret. The best views of Singapore can be seen for free unless you really want to hire a helicopter. There used to be an observation area in the Boat Quay on top of one of the tall bank buildings. It has been closed since September 2001 for security reasons. My secret observation area offers better views and is FREE! It is the Equinox Restaurant inside the Swissôtel The Stamford (there are 2 Swissôtel’s in Singapore). The hotel is Southeast Asia's tallest hotel and you can see panoramic views of Singapore, Indonesia and parts of Malaysia! It’s on level 69 just to make it sound even more impressive.

Here’s how I did it. Jo into the lobby of the hotel and go to the far left and you end up in a bar/lounge. Now go to the far right and at the end turn right. You should be looking at a small lobby with an elevator. Go inside and push the button for the top. You’re in! I went at about 10am in the morning before it opened. When you come out of the elevator you are looking at a series of huge windows and the best view of Singapore! The staff said they were not open, but there are no doors to close so they let us take pictures after we asked nicely. Even if they had said no I would still have been able to do it. Or come back when they opened. There is no security or charges. You do not have to eat or drink here to see it.

Please do 2 things before you go to Singapore:

    1) Add this to your Virtual Tourist ‘Custom Travel Guide’
    2) Rate this tip because I let you in on the secret!

    THANK YOU!

Things To Do: FUNVEE OPEN TOP BUS TOURS
  • Tip Rating:
  • The FunVee Tour Bus is an open-top double decker that does tours around Singapore. They even have what they call a ‘Funbassador’ on board. They essentially offer 4 tours:
    • City Trail with Breakfast
    • Mt. Faber Trial
    • Riverboat Trail
    • Nite Trail

All tours run between 2-3 hours, include free entry to certain sights and are priced between S$23-34. If you are only here for a short period of time this might be a good option for you to see a lot quickly. You can also hire out the bus for large groups. Enjoy!

    Things To Do: THE MERLION
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Merlion is a statue of a Lion with a fish’s body riding on a crest of waves. Singapore is know as the Lion City from a story in the "Malay Annals". In the 11th century Prince Sang Nila Utama of the Sri Vijaya Empire came across the small fisihing village of Temasek, a Javanese word for sea. As he landed on the shore he saw, the story goes, a Lion. The Prince immediately decided to rename the island "Singapura" which in Sanskrit means Lion (Singa) City (Pura).

The Merlion was designed by Mr Fraser Brunner to combine the heritage of the old “Sea” village with the modern “Lion” city of today. It was designed in 1963 and was originally located at the mouth of the Singapore River, across from the Elizabeth Walk. It is the official emblem for the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (STPB). The Merlion is 8.6 metres high and weighs 70 tonnes and was built from cement fondue by the Singapore craftsman, Mr Lim Nang Seng. The Merlion’s the skin is made from porcelain plates and its eyes from small red teacups.

Don’t be surprised to see people visiting with umbrellas, even though the fountain only flows out into the harbour

Raffles Hotel: GO FOR A LOOK
  • Tip Rating:

  • Named after Sir Stamford Raffles, the creator of Singapore, and the place where the Singapore Sling was created. A visit is a must. Drink a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar, walk through the garden terraces or visit the excellent gift shop. This is a Top World Hotel. Hard to believe it once descended into a Backpackers Hostel and was even derelict for a while. It was opened in 1887 and has seen Royalty, actors and other celebrities stay here. It also saw the more humble stay here during its troubled years. It was restored to its current grand design and reopened to the public in 1991. It is now a National Monument ensuring its future upkeep.

Don’t miss this out of your walking tour!
