From Shanghai to Chongqing

Before the Yangzi River was to change by the Three Gorges Dam, we decided to go see it in its "original" beauty!

Mr. Song of CITS Beijing was the best person we could have wished for and helped us with our itinerary. It was his suggestion to take the boat from Shanghai to Chongqing (instead of vice versa) and this way we could enjoy that river like a symphony: at first calm and quiet and succedingly getting more vivid and exciting!

The Three Gorges Dam

The Three Gorges Dam is a gigantic project! It will flood the area all the way to Chongqing, thus making the Yangzi accessible to ocean liners all the way from Shanghai to Chongqing.

The water surface will rise another 170 meters, consequently flooding villages, streets, farms and archeological sites. More than 1 million people will have to leave their homes and move and the whole scenery will change.

We heard all the pros from the local guides, only a very few cons, but the ecological problems are well discussed at least here in Europe.

The Victoria V

We were fortunate to get two cabins aboard the "Victoria V" - a very noble cruise ship.

In this page I will let you join us on this fantastic cruise!
The itinerary will be best viewed in the travellogue, the accomodation - our home for 10 days - will be introduced in this page!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:fantastic scenery - impressive natural "symphony"
  • Cons:too soon to be changed by the Three Gorges Dam
  • In a nutshell:See it while you can!!!

I wish I could go on a cruise of some sort right now. Glad that you saw it before they built the dam.

Nothing really changed in the last 4 years. The Yangzi River can still be cruised. And the Lesser Three Gorges can be easily visited.

Our ship only had 2 laowai on board. I noticed ships passing with foreign groups actually had deck chairs to sit in. The river is still beautiful as it rises. The relocation projects astounding. We must compare notes!
