The Gottesaue Palace is one of the oldest buildings in the Karlsruhe erected in 1588, destroyed in 1689, provisionally rebuilt, and again destroyed by fire in 1735. It was badly damaged by American bombs in May 1944. It lay in ruins for a long time, but was then completely renovated and now contains the State College of Music.
There are concerts performed inside and during July and August, Schloß Gottesaue hosts the Open Air Cinema - a truly fabulous scenery!
Directions: Take tram 1 or 2 (Durlach) and get off at Gottesauer Platz
The Karlsruhe Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Germany. It started in 1865, when the Baden Poultry Breeding Association opened the zoological gardens. But soon, the cost were so immense, that the city took over.
The whole complex has been expanded continuously since then including the creation of the lakes and many gardens.
Today, the zoo is home to over 1000 animals of 150 species from all over the world - with a just recently built polar bear environment for the three polar bears. 800 large trees from a wide diversity of countries, 15,000 roses of 300 strains, numerous tulips and summer flowers, shrubs and climbing plants make a visit to the zoo and gardens a very special experience whatever the time of the year.
The location of the zoo is pretty unique, too: it is right across the street from the Central Trainstation in the very middle of Karlsruhe!
Address: Ettlinger Strasse 6, D-76137 Karlsruhe
State Museum of Natural History
The museum's special attraction is the vivarium that was established in 1938. It is home to indigenous and exotic fish, amphibians, reptiles and lower animals in terrariums, freshwater and seawater aquariums.
The State Museum for Natural History plays an important role as a public museum, research institute and valuable natural-history collection.
It is a fun museum for kids!!!

ZKM by night
The ZKM was established in 1989 and has since gained an international reputation.
An interactive art gallery unites pioneer work and the latest developments from the field of media art. The artworks themselves do not materialise until the visitor interacts with them, new and always different, depending on the visitor's input. Quite a weird and unique feeling!!!
The Museum for Contemporary Art is a museum of all genres. There is more to see than media art with television and video sculptures ("monitor-art"), video installations or computer-generated and animated images. The traditional genres such as photography, sculpture, graphics, design and painting are presented in their contemporary forms as well and are brought into lively interplay with the "new media" - revealing surprising relationships.
The "Mediathek" is divided into an audio collection, a library and a video collection. Since October 1997, it has held a comprehensive collection of international video art, contemporary music and literature on this 20th century art form. All the existing material on the fields of art, architecture, theater and modern design can be researched in a central database.
Entry fee is between 5 € and 15 €, depending on how many of the museums you would like to see! For specifications on entrance fees have a look at their visitors' information. They also sometimes have special deals, so look out!

Building work on the Church of Christ began in 1896. The architects designed the church in the neo-Gothic style.
The church was consecrated on 14th October, 1900, and was named Church of Christ. On the evening before, all the churches in the city rang out their greetings to the new house of God.
The church survived WW1 unscathed, but lost its bells; despite the time of need and inflation, the bells were replaced with a second peal in 1924.
During the night of 2nd to 3rd September, 1942, the Church of Christ was badly damaged in an air raid. But the community was able to use the church again on the 7th March. In early December, 1944, the church fell as one of the victims of the city's worst air raid of all.
It was rebuilt in 1948.
the Municipal Church
The Evangelical municipal church was built by Friedrich Weinbrenner as the cathedral church of Baden state in accordance with instructions from Grand Duke Friedrich.
The foundation stone was laid in 1807 and officially opened in 1816 at Whitsun. The bell tower was modelled on a Greek temple as instructed by the Grand Duke.
Destroyed by bombs in May and September 1944, it was rebuilt in almost seven years using the plans of Horst Linde. The interior was completely redesigned in the process. It has concrete walls and looks rather modern.
The newly constructed municipal church was consecrated by the state bishop in 1958.
Address: Marktplatz/market place across from the townhall
A mint was usually among the institutions of a state capital. The grand ducal Baden mint was Friedrich Weinbrenner's last work in Karlsruhe, which he could not even complete himself.
The first coins were struck in the mint back in the spring of 1827; the very first was a ten guilder piece made of gold from the Rhine. It was presented to Grand Duke Ludwig as a memento.
Even today, not only German coins - on average 210 to 250 million pieces - are struck in Germany's smallest mint.
Prinz Max Palais
The Prinz-Max palace was built in 1881 to 1884 as the villa of the retired banker August Schmieder, who had made a fortune in Breslau and spent quite a bit of money to have this palace like house built for his retirement in the city of his birth, Karlsruhe..
The architect in charge, Durm, was the most important Karlsruhe supporter of "Gruenderzeit" architecture. He erected a building whose display of splendour still hits you in the eye today. Nowadays, it bears the name Prinz Max von Baden, the last German Imperial Chancellor of the empire, who purchased it in 1894.
Most of the interior was destroyed in WW2. After its reconstruction, its use included accommodating the College of Education and the Federal Constitutional Court.
Since 1981, it has housed the Municipal Art Gallery, the city's history in the Prinz-Max-Palais and the Children's Library.
The grenadier guard monument is on Europaplatz, in front of the Postgalerie building on the corner of Kaiserstrasse and Douglasstrasse.
It was built in 1924-25 by the artists Otto Gruber and Emil Valentin Gutmann.
The inscription says: IN MEMORY OF THE / BADEN / GUARD / GRENADIERS (on the front)
Europaplatz is on the Karlstrasse/Kaiserstrasse intersection. It is a pretty huge square in front of the former Main post office - that's why Europaplatz was named Hauptpostplatz until 1979.
The former main post office building is built in neo-Baroque style and has just been turned into an indoor shopping complex, the Postgalerie.
Europaplatz nowadays is the most lively location in Karlsruhe's city center and is the number one meeting point for the youngsters.
