We went to Barentsburg on a daytrip from Longyearbyen

Barentsburg is a Russian settlement on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard - and although I have seen a few Russian/Soviet places, boy, THAT place was something else.... But do read about it in my tips, I hope I can convey a little of this special atmosphere!

Some fellow travellers had warned us not to go there, because they felt it was too frustrating and just not worth visiting, but we were more than happy that we did see this interesting part of Svalbard as well!

Strange to find a Russian settlement on Norwegian territory. I think it's a good idea to mount Arctic Refrigerators in their windows -- taking advantage of the fact that it is just naturally cold outside, so why waste electricity to keep things cool?

It's not the 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 drinks that do the damage, but the ones after that definitely have an effect & that could well explain the photo after all. lol!

An interesting page , Christine ! I have been passing by Barentsburg several times in a short distance, while I was working on cruiseships. BUT it was the times of Cold War and going there was totally impossible at that time !
