Schloß Neuschwanstein

Seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public. The shy king had built the castle in order to withdraw from public life – today Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles in Europe. Every year 1.3 million people visit "the castle of the fairy-tale king". In the summer around 6,000 visitors a day stream through rooms that were intended for just one person!

And in May of 2003 - I was one of those visitors. It was a truly memorable day!

I like the disabled info -- as well as the walking advice -- although Myriam's idea would suit me best! Never been here though :(((

The castle + the Alps must really be a breathtaking view. Thanks for beautiful pics and interesting info. I've read that at the foot of the castle there is a theatre where just one performance is being staged " Longing for Paradise" about Ludwig II.

We took the horse carriage up to Hohenschwangau. It was really too hot to walk! And it was a fun ride too.
