Famous for the Cheese Market

After three days in Amsterdam, we headed north to Alkmaar, which is a fantastic place for a vacation!

You have a little bit of everything:
the city is very picturesque, has many fine museums and during the summer the famous Alkmaar Cheese Market is held every Friday from 10 - 12!

Other than that Alkmaar is only some 10 km away from the North Sea, 30 km from the Ijsselmeer and 40 km north of Amsterdam - so everything is within reach!

Nice travelogue on "People of the Cheese Market" -- too bad all the cheeses nowadays are virtually interchangeable. I've never been to Alkmaar or any of these places on the peninsula north of Amsterdam. Maybe next year . . .

I've enjoyed comparing your Alkmaar experiences with my own recent visit. I wish I'd read your tip on St. Laurentskerk before we went as we didn't bother going inside here and I can see now that we perhaps should have done ;)

Nice page! But I must say it is Brielle, my hometown that was liberated as very first (1 April 1572) and thus is called Libertatis Primitiae.
