Football or soccer is the national sport on the Faroe islands.

As a German - and thus as a member of a soccer crazy nation - I remember very well the match between the German national team and the national team of Faroe a few years back....

The Germans were pretty bad and the Faroese were fighting like hell - and in the interview afterwards (and if I remember correctly also beforehand) the German National Coach always said, that the Faroese team were "a team to be taken absolutely seriously..." ("ein ernstzunehmender Gegner").

Now, I do not want to say anything bad about the Faroese team - in the contrary: there is this country with 25000 people that manages to form a soccer team that is a true threat to teams like Germany (with some 80 million people) or Scotland with a highly reputated soccer tradition...... It really amazed me and now I am a true fan of the Faroese national team!!!

Our Faroese tourguide Hilda told us that rowing was another passion of the Faroer people. And sure enough we saw this boat while looking around the harbor. On the Faroese National Day, Ólavsøka, celebrated on 28 and 29 July, there are always rowing competitions between different villages, so maybe those girls on the picture were practising for that!
