Getting TO/AROUND: We flew from Karlsruhe/Germany directly to Marrakesh with hapagfly. It was a totally enjoyable flight of about 3 hours, lovely food, friendly staff and excellent vision! The airport in Marrakesh is a very small one by the name of Menara, passport control was decent, customs as well and best of all: the airport is only some 10 minutes drive from the city!

Getting TO/AROUND: Taxis are all over the place! There are petit taxis (little taxis) and grand taxis (big taxis). The petit taxis are allowed to take up to 3 passengers. We were told by our guide that a tour within the city or from adjacent neighborhoods to the city should not cost more than 20 DH (2 ?), so what we did was to tell the driver where we wanted to go for 20 DH and usually they accepted. The traffic in Marrakesh is wild, so at times we got out of the taxi with shivering knees, but after all, everything went extremely well!

Getting TO/AROUND: Most of the time we walked through Marrakesh. Distances in the city are not that far and in order to really enjoy the sounds and smells and sights of the city, there is no other way but walk! Especially in the suuqs you just have to walk, but be careful: there are a lot of people on bicycles and motorcycles who don't seem to ever use their brakes..... So you better watch out and jump!

Getting TO/AROUND: After a few days of walking around we decided to take a public bus to the outskirts of Marrakesh to visit a huge supermarket there. Our guide had told us that there was a bus going there from the vicinity of the main post building/McDonalds. Ha, when we got there, we even saw something like a busstop, but there was no indication whether the bus went to our destination. We asked two young men, and both could tell us the bus number (which was 13) and one even walked us alround the corner to show us where the busstation for that bus was! You pay the bus driver when entering the bus - the fare in 2006 was 3 DH (30 cent) one way. The bus stops on the way were not always recognizable, but usually when we saw people on the way waving at the bus, most of the time the bus stopped and took them along!

Biking: Not the perfect alternative...

Getting TO/AROUND: We saw quite a few locals on bicycles, but with the traffic going on in Marrakesh it did not seem like a good idea for us. Interesting enough, there was a "rent-a-bicycle" area right across the street from our hotel, so it seems as if this is not unusual at all. It was just our personal decision not to rent a bike!

Getting TO/AROUND: When we booked our trip to Marrakesh, a tour through the city in a horse carriage was included. Otherwise I would not have booked it, but I must say it was nice! We went on a night tour through Marrakesh and the sound of the horses' hoofs on the cobble stone was special! I felt a little sorry for the horses having to be in all that traffic, but they seemed to be used to it!
