Things To Do: Place Stanislas

  • Place Stanislas is THE sight in Nancy: a square surrounded by palaces that now house the Town Hall, the Opera, the Tourist Information, the Museum of Fine Arts and various hotels and restaurants. Plus: you will be blinded by all this gold that you can find on the gates and wells! A little too much for my taste, but that's the way it is - and that is probably why it has been put on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list as well!

Enjoy the pictures and if you like, have a look at the Place Stanislas on a webcam!

    Things To Do: Place d'Alliance

  • Place d'Alliance is the second of the three 18th century squares that have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. It is the smallest and most intimate square, too. I found this square rather unspectacular, but maybe it is the whole entity that one has to consider - plus after having seen the glittering Place Stanislas, ANYTHING looks rather dull!

There is a nice fountain in the center of the square that was created to resemble the Bernini fountain at Piazza Navona in Rome!

  • Place de la Carrière is the third square that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nancy. I was tempted to put it under "tourist traps" because when we visited here in May 2007 it was more or less a gigantic parking lot! From pictures I could see that there is actually a square there, but in May 2007 there were tents put up for some festival and all around were parking spaces! It had nothing appealing or special in my opinion - I hope when you visit, you will find the beauty of this square somewhere behind parked cars!

Things To Do: The Trimphal Arch

  • The Triumphal Arch was built in the 18th century at the same time as Place Stanislas was created. It was built into the city walls that separated the old city from the new city. It was meant to be a copy of the Triumphal Arch in Rome and was erected in honor of King Louis XV.

Be sure to look at all the reliefs and details - it is quite stunning!

  • The Museum of Fine Arts in Nancy is situated on Place Stanislas. It is open every day except Wednesdays. Entrance fee is 6 € (2007), but the ticket is valid all day! Every first Sunday of the month the entrance is free from 10 a.m. until 1.30 h p.m. (except for the special exhibitions).

Definitely a good tip for art lovers or for bad weather things to do!

  • The Parc de la Pépinière is the largest parc in Nancy. It is a huge parc with lovely flowers inside, lawns that invite you to rest, lots of trees, a beautiful pavillion, a little lake and miles and miles of promenades. It is open from 6.30 a.m. until 8 p.m. (10.30 p.m. from June - August)!

Do take your time to go there and relax a little and enjoy this green part of Nancy!

  • The Craffe Gate is one of the oldest gates (if not the oldest one) in Nancy. It was built in the 14th century as part of the city walls of Nancy. The towers were added in the 15th century and were used as prisons.

On the back side of the Porte de la Craffe is another gate, so if you walk through those two gates you have a feeling like walking through a tunnel. Don't miss it!

Things To Do: Basilica Saint Epvre

  • This basilica looks really old, but it was only built in the second half of the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. At the moment (2007) much of the facade is under scaffolding. The parts that can be seen, though, are pretty impressive. The interior is huge, so do try to visit this church!

  • This church was built at the beginning of the 18th century and became the cathedral in 1777, after Stanislas had died. Do have a closer look at the beautiful organ and the painted cuppola with 150 biblical figures, the Holy Trinity and the Doctors of the Church! Amazing!

Things To Do: Walk the Art Nouveau circuit
  • Tip Rating:

  • The Tourist Information has a suggested walk to enjoy many of the Art Nouveau buildings in Nancy. You can get a special map at the Tourist Office at Place Stanislas or download it here.

It is a nice walking circuit that gives you time to enjoy the buildings, the details and sometimes also the interiors (as e.g. in the Brasserie Excelsior).

You can go at your own pace, make your own little itinerary and take as much time as needed. We went on an afternoon tour, which was not crowded at all, so we strolled along the streets and really loved it! Very relaxing!

I have been several times in Nancy for my job but never found the time to really visit. Except Place Stanislas, of course! I should come back for an actual visit! I have discovered a lot in your page, especially with Art nouveau!
