.... that I took 36 exceptional pictures of Valparaiso only to find out later, that I had forgotten to put a film in my camera!!!! I could have cried, but that would not have helped me any!!!
My only conclusion is, that I will just have to come back a second time!!
The pictures shown on this page are the ones made with my small camera, I do hope, you enjoy them anyway!
The city of Valparaíso, in which past and present are so often indistinguishable, is structured in the form of an amphitheatre. On one side is the bay of the same name, and on the other lies a chain of mountainous hills, now criss-crossed by streets, passageways, alleyways, paths, stairs and public lifts, climbing to the highest points. Valparaíso has 45 hills in total, and the poet Pablo Neruda was once heard saying that to climb up and down all the stairways in this intricate metropolis was just like taking a hike around the whole planet. And it can be said that, along with this mix of past and present, there does exist a certain disharmony of styles. It is not uncommon to see, situated beside a magnificent building built in the classic fashion, a modern and somewhat garish office block. |
