Both Hamburg and Bremen have been Hanseatic cities for a long time. And these two cities have been rivals ever since.
There is this neat saying:
Hamburg is the gate to the world, but Bremen holds the key
To understand this better, let me give you a little bit of background: Hamburg is Germany's second largest city (much bigger than Bremen) and has a very important harbor - so it is widely known as the gate to the world. On the other hand - Bremen has a key on her flag, so that is what that saying refers to.....
Here is some "solid" information now:
Free Hanseatic City of Bremen: International seaport and trading centre right near the North Sea. Independent state of the Federal Republic of Germany, consisting of the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven Two-city state covering an area of 400 square kilometres - smallest of the 16 German states. State's total population: 681,722, thereof 550,392 in Bremen, making it the tenth largest town in Germany, and 131,330 in Bremerhaven. Significance: second most important foreign trade location in the Federal Republic of Germany (see, what I mean???). |
