| Palace of the Princes-bishops |
|
| | The city of the Prince-Bishops Liege, or Luik in Dutch, is the largest city in Wallonia and its cultural centre.
Until the foundation of of the Belgian State, Liege was a principality ruled by prince-bishops with a great autonomy within the German Empire. |
| | In the XIX century, it profited of its strategic situation on the river Meuse and the wealth provided by the coal mines in its surroundings. The decline of the heavy industry in the second half of the last century led the city into a difficult situation of which it has managed to recover thanks to its vitality as a regional centre. |

diocletianvs Sat Sep 15, 2007 07:01 UTC Old industries and high buildings .... sounds like a place I would like ;) Interesting stuff about recycling the building materials to build an Opera. | m-joy Thu Sep 16, 2004 09:48 UTC Nice page! Indeed, there are very cozy corners in the old town. ;-) | Norali Thu Mar 4, 2004 11:36 UTC About time for me to return... It was a cozy place indeed. Their nightlife is OK too, as far as I could see from some Liègois I was hanging around with at Univesity. Thanks! | MartinaH Thu Mar 4, 2004 11:20 UTC Great pics of Liège ... makes me think that I should finaly start building my page about Liège ;-) |
