Montjuic: The Mies van der Rohe Pavillion in Montjuīc

  • The German Pavillion for the World Exposition held in Barcelona in 1929 is a masterpiece of modern architecture. It was designed by Mies van der Rohe. When the expo finished it was dismantled because nobody seemed to have interest for this rather small building. However, given its outstanding architectural interest, the local authorities decided to rebuild it years afterward using the original plans. They could not have had a better idea, because there are not many human constructions where the use of espace, light and volumes is as achieved as in this small pavillion. By the way, the famous Barcelona chair, an icon of contemporary furniture design and still fashionable after so many years, was also designed by Mies van der Rohe for this pavillion.

  • El Barri de Grācia is one of the liveliest neighborhoods in BCN. It was an independent town before the city walls were tore down in order to build the modern city but now it is comprised within the city boundaries. However, it still retains a 'little town' atmosphere and a quite bohemian flair. It is full of narrow streets, food markets, little shops and lovely squares which invite to drink a coffee and chat with the locals in the many open air terraces. You can see more pictures in the travelogue.

  • The Pedralbes area, North part of the Diagonal avenue, is one of the chic neighbouhoods in the city. There are beautiful shopping malls and a young atmosphere because there is a University campus there. You can also visit here the royal palace and its ceramic museum (the park in front is very beautiful) or admire some examples of contemporary architecture. I have always liked the building on the picture. Seems nice to live in an apparment where so many plants hang from the balcony.
