Benidorm is the story of the development of mass tourism in the Spanish Mediterranean coast.
Until the 1960s it was a small fishing village on a rocky outlet between two impressive beaches for which the presence of the sea had been more an obstacle than a chance for development.
When Spain started its successful tourist carreer, Benidorm had all the ingredients necessary to please the sun hungry north Europeans that started to make holidays in the country: marvelous beaches, and many, many hours of sun.
You could not recognise this little fishing village any more in Benidorm, but even if you are not interested in packed beaches and low budget tourism, Benidorm is worth a visit even if its only for its interest as sociological phenomenon. |
