Being the seat of the Spanish monarchy since the XVI century, there are a lot of royal palaces in Madrid and its surroundings. Apart from the Royal palace itself you can visit:
-The Palacio de Aranjuez (see picture): by the river Tajo, South of Madrid, this is a lovely palace with wonderful gardens. It was built by the Bourbons as a summer residence following the French style.
- The Palacio de la Granja: another summer residence in the Sierra north to Madrid (province of Segovia). The fountains in the well kept park are really nice, but they only work on certain days of the year. Near it, you should also visit the Palace of Riofrío, which was used as a hunting pavillion by the Monarchy.
- Palacio del Pardo, in the outskirts of Madrid. It is currently used as official residence for Heads of State visiting the city. However, it can be visited if there are not guests.
- El Escorial: not only a palace, but also a monastery. The seat of Government of Philip II and a must for every Madrid visitor.
