Palma (Ca. 300.000 inhabitants) is the capital of the island of Majorca and the Autonomous Comunity of the Balearic Islands.

The Balearic islands are the number 1 tourist destination of the world. It has become the richest region in Spain mainly because of the important revenues from the tourism.

Some areas of Majorca are totally devoted to German (S'Arenal) or British (Magalluf) tourists. For many people from these nationalities this is a cheap way of having sun and fun without really having the feeling of being abroad. Fish and chips, German bear and Bratwurst... For this reason, Majorca means for many people a horrible place packed with vulgar tourists and ugly buildings lined along the coast.

Paradoxically this "low class tourism" coexists with the members of the international jet set that come here year after year and have built beautiful villas or restored old possessions (traditional farm houses), the ultimative trend among trendy people.

In fact, most of the tourists just get to know one side of the island, and go away without having learnt something from its interesting culture and language (apart from Spanish, people speak a dialect of Catalan here), their history and their way of living.

You cannot really say that the beautiful little towns inland or in the northern sierra are totally free from tourist pollution. However, they are a world apart from the hotels and beach resorts on the most developped areas of the coast.

Town Hall

Palma de Mallorca is a very pleasant city to live in and it is full of art and interesting monuments. The impressive Gothic cathedral is the only one to reflect its silouette on the waters of the Mediterranean (or rather used to).
