Valencia's turn of the century face
Valencia's newest face
Having lived there for almost three years, I got to know Valence relatively well. During that time, I did anything possible to quit the city during the Falles, that extravagant festival of fire, gun-powder, crowds, music and huge papier maché monuments that are built during a whole year only to be burnt in the night of Saint Joseph's. I must admit, however, that since I moved away, I have religiously returned almost every year to honour the Geperudeta. And I have truly enjoyed every time!! This proves once again my theory that all places tend to look much better when I see them with tourist eyes than from the perspective of a local.

The Falles is something worth while experiencing; but people who cannot bear crowds and noise should avoid Valencia during those wacky days in mid March at any rate. During the rest of the year, they will find a bit more of tranquillity, but never a sleepy, silent place. Valencia is indeed a passionate city, with a very Mediterranean temperament, and that means fun and romance, but sometimes also more noise than one would desire. Anyway, the city has lots to offer in terms of architecture, culture, gastronomy and nightlife. New urban developments and the revamping of the old areas are making of it a rising star in the tourist firmament. Not that the city is a hidden gem reserved to selected connoisseurs, but it is still far from being a new Barcelona. So now is the moment to visit Valencia before rumour spreads.
