"The North of France" Nord-Pas-de-Calais by DanielF

Unsurprisingly, the Nord-Pas de Calais Region consists of the départments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais (Strait of Dover in English). Unsurprisingly too, it is situated in the northernmost tip of France, bordering Belgium and the English Channel.

Surprisingly though, the region has many more hidden charms than its gloomy weather and prosaic name suggest. Being the cradle of the industrial revolution in France and heavily mined region, devastated in several wars and going through difficult economic times, it could not be less alluring. However, after closer scrutiny, this region reveals a rich history of belonging to the Southern Netherlands (it only became part of France in the 18th century), with beautiful cities and a lovely if misty coast.
