By the River: Iban PicNic - II

They built a simple wooden structre and lit a fire. Then, they placed the bamboo stems over the fire and turned them periodically until the food was perfectly cooked.

They retrieved the food packages from the stems, poured them into dishes and ready to eat.

I must say that the food was a bit insipid for my taste, but we had a great afternoon and it was a very interesting way of cooking.

When we left, everything was in the very same state as we had found it.

By the River: Go to pic-nic Iban style

After our stay in the longhouse, the Ibans whith whom we had stayed invited us to a picnic befroe we headed back to Kuching.

The entire community came along with us in their perahus and selected an adequated place by the river. They then proceed to cut some bamboo stems that they would then use for cooking.

The women mixed all the ingredients (different kinds of vegetables and chicken), wrapped them into the bamboo leaves and put them into the hollow stems of the bamboo.

from the local market: Worms

These big worms seemed to be a delikatessen in Sarawak, as we could find them in several of the local markets. As for us, we did not have the guts to try them.
