A few days in Uruguay is a perfect excursion while you are in Buenos Aires. Distances as so big in Argentina that Uruguay is one of the few places you can go from Buenos Aires without taking a plane in a reasonable time. Many Argentinians desincouraged us to visit Montevideo, claiming that it would be a boring city with not much to see, but in fact I found it very interesting. Much more than Colonia del Sacramento or Punta del Este. Montevideo is a quiet city, with less than 1.5 m. inhabitants. It is also the youngest and southernmost capital city in South America. It was founded in the XVIII century by the Gobernor of Buenos Aires. Its first settles came from the Canary Islands and from the city of Buenos Aires. Montevideo is called home by more than half of the country's population. Nevertheless, it is not a very big city (1.3 m. inhabitants) and, compared to sophisticated Buenos Aires, it has a rather provincial and relaxed air. |

matcrazy1 Thu Jan 8, 2004 15:49 UTC Interesting tips and suggestions! And I'd surely want to visit the stadium when the first Footbal World Cup ever was held (and to see your pic of the stadium hehe). Thanks for sharing! | siwi Sat Mar 22, 2003 10:41 UTC I always dreamed about Montevideo... I don't know why... Reading your page, I find out that I really want to go there... Thx | RORRO72 Mon Mar 17, 2003 02:58 UTC Beautiful pictures. The main street in the old quarter is called Sarandí that finish in the Escollera Sarandí. Behind you in the picture is La Puerta de la Ciudadela that marks the division between the old district and the Independence Square | tini58de Tue Aug 20, 2002 17:58 UTC wonderful page - really looks worthwhile visiting! |
