| | Melaka, or Malacca as it is better known in the Western world, is the most historical city of Malaysia. Even the whole country and the peninsula where it lays or the straits that flows between the peninsula and Sumatra are named after it.
Melaka was the capital of the most powerful Sultanate in the peninsula and the place where the first Europeans settled in this part of the world.
Then successive waves of immigration from different regions of China have left a very noticeable mark in the city, giving birth to the Peranakan culture. |
| | Today, Portuguese, Dutch and British influences are still visible in many parts of the city. They even say that the offspring of the ancient Portuguese settlers still speak an old form of Portuguese.
Well, I did not hear any Portuguese in Melaka, but I did enjoy my visit there. And with such a rich historical background, anyone would. |
