When people think of Michigan, one of the first things they think about is cars. Well, you can forget this thought if you plan on visiting one of our state's most famous tourist attractions. This charming island, which lies in the Straits of Mackinac right between Lakes Michigan and Huron, hasn't allowed the "horseless carriage" on its shores since 1896. But don't worry; you can still take a guided tour-on a horse-drawn carriage!
As you may have guessed, Mackinac's history can be a bit...strange. There's the case of the shooting victim who made a full recovery but was left with part of his stomach permanently exposed, allowing his doctor to learn important information about the human digestive system. The shop where the shooting took place is open for tours. Then there's the story of one of the island's first white settlers, who upset the natives so much (by robbing them of their firs and watering down their liquor) that it was no longer safe for him to remain on the island. So like any good father would, he sent his one and only son to look after his affairs. Even if history doesn't normally interest you, Mackinac's historical sites are worth checking out.
But of course, we know the real reason you're here is for the fudge. And with shops in seemingly every other building, you'll find plenty to please your taste buds.
