Few countries have seen as much trauma in the past century as Germany. This very young country (it never existed before 1870) has been decimated by two world wars, has had its citizens subject to torture and death by history's most infamous leader and has survived over 40 years split into two separate nations. It is currently in the midst of trying to create a national identity, something it's never really had the chance to develop in its brief history. Luckily, its cultural heritage is centuries-old and serves as a much-needed unifying force.
