Washington D.C. Travel Guide: 5,535 reviews and 14,552 photos

With the possible exceptions of New York and Los Angeles, no city in America has as many well-known landmarks as Washington. Every American, wether they've been there or not, is familiar with Capitol Hill, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and of course the White House. Add to that the many museums, the National Cathedral and the many government institutions, and you're looking at a city full of familiar icons and addresses.
There's no way you're going to see it all, and the places you do see will undoubtedly be very crowded. The streets are very confusing, and the traffic is hell. If you don't plan ahead, you're likely to waste plenty of time figuring out where you're going and how you're getting there. Usually I tell people to avoid sticking to an itinerary no matter where they're going. Washington is definitely an exception.
I do hope I haven't cast the city in a negative light, because I truly enjoyed my time in Washington. For 281 million of us, it serves as the center of our government and has played a major role in our heritage. It is a city that every American should visit at least once in his life. And if you aren't American but wish to understand the country, Washington is an excellent place to start.
