For as long as I can remember, any time I would hear of a place, any place, I'd have an itch to go see it. In high school I was very fortunate to have opportunities available to travel as an exchange student in Japan, Germany and Peru, and while I haven't been able to do any traveling in recent years, I'm grateful to have been able to see what I have. Hopefully I still have most of my life left to live, and I'm looking forward to seeing much more of the world in the decades to come!
Currently I'm working at a Burger King next to the World Trade Center in New York's financial district. While it pays next to nothing, we get a lot of tourists from all over the world in our restaurant. If you're ever in the neighborhood, stop in and say hi! If we're not too busy I'm always eager to chat for a few minutes and tell people a little bit about this amazing community, which inspires me on a daily basis and of which I am so proud to be a part. And while I may not be able to afford many (okay, any) luxuries at the moment, I feel so privileged to live in this city, not because it's supposed to be so famous and exciting, but because it's the first place I've ever lived in that truly feels like home.
Except, of course, for one key area. I am not now, nor will I ever be, a fan of either of NYC's baseball teams. Growing up, Chicago was the nearest city with a Major League team, and I remain loyal to my Cubbies even though I now live much further away. One of my longest-standing dreams is to see them win the pennant. Think it'll never happen? It's not the only seemingly hopeless cause I've ever invested myself in...and I tend to be pretty stubborn. Win or lose, I'm a fan for life :-)
I do want to add one more thing. Please do not ask me to put pictures on any of my pages. I do not own a scanner; currently, I don't even own a camera. Believe me, I would love to be able to show you some of my favorite places in what I consider to be the greatest earthly gift I have ever been given, this wonderful country I so joyfully call my own. And it would be great fun to set up travelogues for the beautiful foreign lands I've so far been able to visit. But it is not possible at the moment, and while I never think of myself as disadvantaged, I resent it when people assume I have access to the same luxuries they take for granted. I am very fortunate in so many ways, just not financially right now. |
