Perhaps it was the weather . . . or perhaps it was the people, but we loved everything about Terceira. A little less congested than some of the other islands we spent our entire full day there out on the road. The trees and flora were mystical and we spent as much time parked on the side of the road looking at scenery as we did driving.
The largest town is Angra do Heroismo. The town is nominated by UNESCO as a " world-town " worth to be preserved. The town was on New Years day 1980 struck by a huge earthquake. Many of the beautiful buildings in the center of the town were destroyed. But many many beautiful buildings are still preserved. You can still see some remaining ruins from the earthquake. There are a very large cathedral, a historic museum, and a bullfighter arena. Angra do Heroismo is absolutely worth a visit with many hotels, residencias and restaurants for any wallet to choose from. |
| | Cows, cows and more cows On each of the islands we witnessed herds being moved from field to field, but this was our favorite. Soon after this photo was taken the herb approached a truck loaded with hay and prompted made a left turn to graze on the contents of the truck. The owner of the herd quickly had to jump from the truck to avert his cows back towards the route to the new field. |
| Herb at a Terceira Cheese Factory |
| | Cheese Factory Of course no visit is complete without at least one visit to a cheese factory, a main product of the islands. |
