One Of My Favourite City

Suzhou is a key tourist city in China. The ancient city lies in a region of rivers, lakes and canals. Streets and alleys in the city extend side by side with canals. Small bridges and flowing waters, white walls and dark gray tiles match one another in tranquil elegance. As a poem describes, " On arriving in Suzhou you behold: Houses are all pillowed on water's edge."
Over 2500 years ago during the Spring & Autumn Period King He Lu of Wu State established Suzhou as the capital and now it is one of the oldest and prettiest towns under the state protection. The Grand Canal passes through the city and the streets in the city parallel or crisscross the rivers and canals, forming the city like a chessboard. Visiting Suzhou leads you to the great appreciation of the beautiful scenery of hills and lakes, the galaxy of classical gardens and places of historic interest, the exquisite folk arts and crafts.

Beautiful Gardens

Classical Gardens, with a history of over 2000 years, classical gardens in Suzhou hold a unique position in world gardening history. They are regarded as Chinese artistic treasures. In December 1997, UNESCO Heritage Committee added these classical gardens of Suzhou to the World Heritage List. As well known as those classical gardens are such places of interest as Tiger Hill, Tianping Hill and Stone Lake, etc. They enjoy the same high reputation as Suzhou gardens and are much visited by both domestic and foreign tourists.
An old saying goes: "Chinese gardens in the Southern Yangtze Valley are the most elegant, yet those in Suzhou beat all the others." These gardens in Suzhou, considered as works of art combining artistic and natural beauty, demonstrate great achievements in architecture, landscape gardening, carving, calligraphy and painting. There are over 60 gardens in the city now. The Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden rank among the "four most noted national gardens" in China, and together with the Master-of-Nets Garden and the Mountain Villa with Embracing Beauty, they came to be placed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in December 1997.
