The Magic of Just One City Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States. As such, the city has become a multicultural city with an extremely large & continuously growing international community. Due to this large international population, Houston is also a sanctuary city where certain practices are in place in order to protect illegal immigrants. Houston does not permit the use of municipal funds or resources for the enforcement of federal immigration laws, forbidding the police & other municipal employees from inquiring about one’s immigration status. Taking into consideration the city’s constant dire need for a competent labor force, this measure became vital in order to protect the city’s economy, which relies a great deal on the labor of illegal immigrants. With an estimated 1.1 million residents hailing from outside of the United States, Houston is also home to the nation’s third largest concentration of consular offices, representing roughly 86 nations.
Houston is a vibrant city that vigorously enjoys the fact that it is a place of firsts. General Sam Houston, the city’s heroic namesake, was the first president of the Republic of Texas. Houston, the city, was the first word spoken from the surface of the moon & the first to build an air-conditioned sports stadium. Oddly enough, Houstonians take great pride in these facts.
I've been living & working in the Houston area for roughly five years now. Even though it was a bumpy start at the beginning of my journey, I eventually fell in love with the city. For me, the city's labor & civil rights histories are what makes me proud to say Houston is my new hometown. |
