How Good I Feel To Be Back In South Carolina Hilton Head Island has a rich history that started with a seasonal occupation by Native Americans well over thousands of years ago. Continuing with its development, the island experienced a great deal of European exploration & was a main stop during the height of the Sea Island cotton trade, which is one of the most valuable & costly varieties of cotton from the West Indies.
During the United States’ Civil War, Hilton Head Island became an important base of operations for the Union blockade of Southern ports. Upon falling to Union troops, hundreds of ex-slaves flocked to the island, which is still home to many native islanders, many of whom are descendants of freed slaves known as the Gullah or Geechee. Surprisingly enough, the Gullah have managed to hold onto much of their ethnic & cultural identity.
At first I couldn’t believe I was back in South Carolina, gliding along the glistening waves before they so abruptly crashed onto the shoreline. Having spent nearly the entire previous year combating crime, I was overdue for a break from the gripping savageness of humanity. I found my break, my solace, under the calming rays of the beating sun. The following is a summation of my very short time reunion with one of my favorite places in the State of South Carolina: The Town of Hilton Head Island. |
