The Craddle of Civil Rights Milestones

Once Upon a Time in Montgomery...

The Pimp
Forward I drove, far away from the desolate repulsion of military thought and cadence, beyond the classical borders of the Palmetto State, further than my fanatical imagination could ever travel, and into a realm of antique fortunes, masked charades, and thoughtful sorrows: under inconceivable reflections – reflections of personal strength and fortitude – I enter this “Heart of Dixie”, a capital of mirrors reflecting tragedy’s past.

For better or worse I am here – here to embrace the particles of regret’s filthy presence; it is a presence I hope to feel…nourish…explore. Does this wretched heart of Dixie pulsate with remorse? Has it vocalized its six “Our Father’s” and twelve “Hail Mary’s” upon its rosary of guilt? For better or worse I am here – here to embrace…learn…and to share this moment with my six – year –old son.

Entering the city of harboring disparagement, I quickly realized it was like some sort of mausoleum for underlying vibrations waiting to explode. I steered my 2000, grey in color, Ford Focus station wagon down the pothole – infested road that was Washington Avenue, west of Dexter Avenue, with my son gleefully bouncing all over the backseat.

Without even being aware, our rickety mode of transportation had stalled to a halt, directly in front of a silhouette of the Alabama Capitol building. The surrounding edifices were dripping with camera – wielding tourists; multitudes of digital flashes disturbed the pace of local passerbys. I got out of my motorized throne of bliss, stood among the throngs of cheap thrill seekers, and took a couple of pictures as well.

Another excellent historical page, Michael; I was a kid when the civil right movement began in the South, but remember I was fascinated by the fact discrimination still existed in the “lighthouse of civilisation”. I enjoyed learning more with you.

Very interesting insights into what happened in Montgomery during the early years of the Civil Rights movement. I remember those days, including Gordon Lightfoot's "Black Day in July" describing Detroit's riots.
