Lived in Starkville for three years. Although a small town, within the last two years it has really started to grow and add some needed amenities (new movie theater, new restaurants). Also has a new Wal-Mart supercent (not necessarily a plus to some). I found the people to be exceptionally friendly and the town to be very safe. Not necessarily a tourist destination, but a very enjoyable place to drop by when in the area. Good restaurant choices include City Bagel Cafe, Little Dooey's (barbeque), and the Cotton District Grill. All along Univeristy/Main Street.
