Catedral Santiago, Parque Central, Antigua

Antigua is lovely. It's situated in a high valley with 3 volcanoes and hills to all sides. The architecture is interesting and evocative, and I love the colorful paint on many of the walls of the city. It's a very charming city. It is quite touristy though. It's a great place to study Spanish, as it's reknown for the high concentration of Spanish language schools found here. I took 2 weeks of lessons and then traveled around the country, trying out what I had learned. It was a neat experience!

Pros:A lovely old city with lots of charm.
Cons:VERY touristy.
In a nutshell:No visit to Guatemala is complete without a visit to Antigua!

I plan to visit Antigua in mid-May. I've read that the general crime rate in Guatemala is pretty high. Did you feel safe while traveling in Antigua?
