I never imagined Padua to be so beautiful and so rich in art and architecture. I never planned on going to Padua but once there I was overwhelmed with all that this city had to offer.
On the train to Padua I met a local lady who told me,
"Padova e' famosa per il prate senze erbe, il cafe senza porte e il santo senza nome"
"Padova is famous for its meadow without produce, the cafeteria without doors and the saint without a name"
and I'm going to tell you why :
1. Il Prato delle Valle is not a meadow but rather a piazza encircled by a canal, statues and beautiful architecture.
2. Cafe Pedrocchi is famous throughout Italy for never closing its doors. It is open to everyone whether or not they intend on purchasing something to drink or eat.
3. Sant' Antonio is often called il Santo. If someone made reference to the Saint, you would know that they were referring to Sant' Antonio - the nameless saint.
Although he was born in Lisbon, Portugal he is associated with the town of Padua because it is here that he nurtured his Franciscan vocation.
