Panoramic picture taken from the Buda Hill BUDA (Castle District) & PEST (Inner City), the two towns in one. Buda was founded by Bela IV's declaration from 1255. The golden age of the whole Castle District came during the reign of King Matthias (1458-1490). The Royal Palace and buildings around it reflected the glory of that great Renaisance King. For centuries this was the heart of the nation, with most of the offices of state located here. The Second WW brought tremendous devastation here, too. Fortunately, the old style was retained when the houses, streets and buildings were restored. The Buda Castle District was declared part of the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1988. The Inner City, contains an almost 30 km strech of the Danube, flowing North to South between Buda and Pest. Several of the city's most important and impressive public buildings line the ambankments. |
| | Fishermen's Bastion The section of the rampart of the old wall faces Pest. It is located above the fisherman's village of olden times and a fish market was still being regularly held beside the church in the 1830s - hence the name of the bastion. |
TURUL The mythic bird of the ancient Magyars, stands here on the palisade of the Royal Palace in Buda. Not only here, Turul's monuments are spread whole over Hungarian towns. | | |
